Clouds Rest in Yosemite National Park is a popular hike with 360 degree views of the park at nearly 10,000 ft elevation. The peak sits about 1000 ft higher than half dome and you don’t need a permit to do this hike. And it’s less crowded and easier, too.

It’s said to be heavily trafficked, but it really wasn’t that busy the day we hiked it. I actually think the view form Clouds Rest is a bit better than half dome. But if you have the chance to do half dome, it’s of course an iconic and challenge hike.

Plan to hike about 14 miles with 2800 feet of over all elevation gain. Bring water, there isn’t much to filter along this trail.

Before heading into the park, download the free National Parks app and look up Yosemite and favorite it. The app is completely free, the app site says “it’s our gift to you as part of the National Park Service’s Centennial Celebration.”

By using GPS, (no data required) the app will show your location on trails and vertical profiles.

If you have the paid version of All Trails it will also do the same thing.
